INSURANCE GLOSSARY

I — Insurance Terms

Identity Fraud Insurance, Incurred But Not Reported (IBNR), Indemnity and more.

Identity Fraud Insurance Kimlik Doğrulama ve Kimlik Hırsızlığı Sigortası
Insurance covering financial losses, legal costs and identity restoration expenses arising from identity theft or fraudulent use of personal credentials. The corporate version protects against employee identity fraud, particularly in payroll and HR systems.
Incurred But Not Reported (IBNR) Gerçekleşmiş Ama Bildirilmemiş Hasar (IBNR)
Actuarial reserve set aside for losses that have occurred by the balance sheet date but have not yet been reported to the insurer. Particularly significant in long-tail lines (liability, health) and has a material impact on financial statements.
Indemnity Tazminat
The principle that insurance restores the insured to the same financial position as before the loss, without profit or penalty. Under the indemnity principle, payment is limited to the actual economic loss suffered. Fixed-sum benefits (such as life insurance or accident benefit lump sums) are exceptions to this principle.
Indemnity Principle Tazminat Prensibi
The fundamental insurance principle that an indemnity payment should restore the insured to the same financial position as before the loss — no more and no less. Prevents over-insurance, duplicate recovery and profitable loss events; underpins subrogation and contribution doctrines.
Infrastructure Project Insurance Altyapı Proje Sigortası
A comprehensive insurance programme for large infrastructure projects (bridges, tunnels, motorways, ports, urban transit) covering construction, operational and maintenance phases. Bundles the mandatory covers required under project finance structures (PPP/BOT models).
Institute Cargo Clauses (ICC) Enstitü Kargo Klozları (ICC)
Standardised cargo insurance clauses produced by the Institute of London Underwriters, universally adopted in international trade. Three levels: ICC (A) broadest (all risks), ICC (B) named perils only and ICC (C) most restricted; choice depends on commodity and trade route.
Insurance Brokerage Sigorta Brokerliği
An intermediary service in which a licensed broker acts on behalf of the insured (policyholder) to identify, negotiate and place appropriate insurance coverage in the market. Unlike an insurance agent, who represents the insurer, a broker owes a duty of care to the client. In Turkey, brokerage is regulated under Law No. 5684 and supervised by SEDDK.
Insured Sigortalı
The person or entity protected by the insurance policy and entitled to receive indemnification in the event of a covered loss. The insured and the policyholder (the party who contracted and pays for the policy) are often the same but may differ, as when an employer purchases group health coverage on behalf of employees.
Insurer Sigorta Şirketi (Sigortacı)
A licensed entity that assumes risk from policyholders in exchange for premium and indemnifies them for covered losses according to policy terms. In Turkey, insurers must hold a licence from SEDDK. The insurer is distinct from the broker (who represents the insured) and the agent (who represents the insurer).
International Surety Bond Uluslararası Kefalet
A bond issued for cross-border contracts between parties in different countries. The applicable international rules depend on the instrument type and any explicit contractual reference: URDG 758 (ICC Uniform Rules for Demand Guarantees) governs demand guarantees only; ISP 98 governs standby letters of credit; conventional surety bonds fall outside both rule sets and operate under their own policy conditions. International surety requires specialist assessment of language, governing law and country risk that differs meaningfully from domestic surety underwriting.
